Interview: Ville Valo
Larger Than Life

Years of hard work have launched Finland’s HIM
from a band with a modest cult following in the
United States into the mainstream. With some
help perhaps from their “Heartagram” logo, HIM
has become a household name among hard rock
and metal fans. At the band’s stop at the 2006
HFStival in Columbia, Md., frontman Ville Valo
spoke to Jason Price of Live-Metal.net about the
band's song writing process, the status of the
band's next album, the struggles of touring in the
United States and more. In the end, Valo squashes
the solo career rumors and discovers that all roads
lead to Black Sabbath.

Live-Metal: What is the biggest misconception about HIM?

Ville Valo: That we are miserable bastards. A lot of people think that we play really melancholy music, people think that we are really miserable. Actually, you know, I think that it is a very cathartic thing. You get your shit into the music and you can be a happy person outside of it, and eat ice cream and listen to the birds sing! [laughs] And watch Jim Carrey movies.

Are you a big fan of Jim Carrey?

No, I hate him. No, I hate comedies. [laughs]

How do you feel that you have evolved as a band through the years?

It is hard to say how we have evolved because I have known the bass player and the guitar player since I was nine years old. So we have grown up together and we were playing in different bands. When we started out we were kids and now we are getting into our mid-life, our mid-life crisis type of thing happening [laughs]. You know the more you do, the better you get, hopefully!

How did the “Heartagram” logo, so heavily associated with the band, come to be?

Let's see. I am turning 30, so it was like, about nine years and seven months ago when I turned twenty. I always draw things, so I was drawing and waiting for the rest of the guys to come to my apartment with kegs of beer and getting ready to start celebrating me turning into a man, so closer to one, and I just drew it down. I have always loved Led Zeppelin, their four symbols on their fourth album and Rob Zombie and White Zombie's visuals and stuff like that. I always wanted to make a symbol for our band, and then we got it.

You have had a slow build in the United States. As you have toured the U.S. for the past few years, how has touring changed you?

Well to be brutally frank, touring in the States is a pain in the ass every now and then because the travel is really, really heavy, especially on this tour. We just flew in from Seattle, tomorrow we are flying to New Orleans, so it is like zig zag, zig zag, zig zag. The distances are so long compared to Europe. Europe is a lot easier. It is like maybe 200 miles a night. You have a bit more time to hang out and sleep better and stuff like that. This is heavy duty traveling all the time. With Dark Light being the first album properly released here, we have been doing some press for it and it's being played on the radio now, thank God. Of course it has changed the vibe. A lot more people know who we are.

What was the biggest challenge in making Dark Light?

In making an album, there are always a lot of little tiny challenges. On Dark Light, I think that the biggest challenge was to try and sing the background vocals while they were shooting a Playboy video at the same spot where we were recording. It was pretty hard because all we could see was naked ladies running about so it was really hard to concentrate.

Understandably! How long did it take to write the album?

I write constantly, so it may take two months to record and a month to mix it. I write all the time, so maybe four years. I usually write a lot of stuff that is not necessarily ready and we start working on it later on. We are not one of those bands that would go into a pre-production stage and write everything there. A lot of American bands, for example, do it.

What is the typical song-writing process for HIM?

I have a hangover and sit down on my bed, I have an acoustic guitar and start strumming and pretending that I am Neil Young. Then we put on the distortion pedals and we rape the song. That's what we do!

How many songs will you normally write in preparation for an album?

Only the good ones. I hate songwriters that write 100 songs for an album and pick up the 10 best, because it is a fucking waste of time. We try and write the stuff that feels really good and we are sure that we want to record it. So if there are 12 tracks on an album, maybe 14 all together.

After listening to HIM, what do you want people to walk away with?

Walk away with the understanding that all roads lead to Black Sabbath in the realm of rock n' roll.

For those how haven't seen HIM live, how would you describe it?

Umm ... We are like a very miserable version of the Backstreet Boys.

You used to do a cover of the Backstreet Boys.

Back in the day we did, yeah. Actually we played "Larger Than Life" at a couple of festivals. We wanted to piss off some goth fans. It was pretty funny to see guys like that know the chorus and be singing and dancing along to it.

What are some of your favorite songs to play live?

Well that is the good thing about being in this band. It differs from day to day because at some places people prefer some songs and when you are playing live it is supposed to be an interaction thing happening between the crowd and the band. So it keeps on changing everyday. That is the only reason to do it or it would be boring.

Do you get a different energy from playing a small club versus a bigger venue?

Well you know, thank God, we use so many strobe lights and heavy lights that I can't see shit nowadays anyway, so it doesn't really matter. I just see the three first rows.

Your music translates very well acoustically. Any plans for a possible future acoustic release?

No, well, no. Umm. Fucking hell, no. I think that there are so many good acts doing great acoustic stuff now and our forte is doing what we do, so not necessarily. Maybe we will incorporate a bit more of acoustic sections in our music in the future, but no, it would be boring. I hated the "Unplugged" series.

Have you started working on your next album?

Yeah. We have about eight songs that I am working on at the particular moment.

So you have been writing while on the road?

Yeah, I carry my guitar with me, so I try to read and write and do everything as much as possible.

What does the future hold for HIM as a band? I have heard that you have contemplated some solo work in the future.

Well, no, no no. I have a few more Pink Floyd-ish things that I have been writing in the past, but we will probably incorporate that into HIM's music, as well. Because at the end of the day when I start writing a song, it always ends up being on our album.

What do you think about the state of rock music today?

I think that the state of rock music is really good. I think there are a lot of good bands that we have had the pleasure of touring with, like a band from Seattle called Aiden on this tour and they're great. Kill Hannah's new album is really good. The Strokes new album is really good, the latest one. I think that there is a lot of good happening, but people think that rock is dead. But it has never went away.

You guys have been on the road for a while now, and toured relentlessly. How has life on the road affected you and your music?

The more you tour, the more liberating it becomes. You don't think about the technical aspect of it anymore. You just have fun. It is a bit more loose, and the hangovers are worse. That is what it does to you! [laughs]

Any stories from your life on the road that you might want to share?

Plenty, but most of it is very X-rated. [laughs] You know, the normal stuff, just watch Spinal Tap and it has all happened to everybody who has played in a rock band and been touring.

Have you ever had any “Spinal Tap" moments onstage?

We, you know, I am always losing myself. I never do soundchecks, so I never know where the stage is, so I always keep on fucking that up. I always walk in the wrong direction. We've had most of it. We never had the cocoons where our bass player couldn't get out and we never had Stonehenge. The rest is very close. [laughs]

What was the first album that you bought?

The year was '84 or '85 it was Animalize by KISS. I still have the vinyl.

What about the last album you bought?

The She Wants Revenge album.

Aside from that, what else are you listening to?

I am listening to Killing Joke and Kill Hannah and everything that starts with a "Kill." I don't listen to a lot of music. I think that nowadays the best music is books. So I am reading a lot of Chuck Palahniuk. I think that is more inspiring than listening to a lot of rock bands or pop bands or whatever. And Damian Marley.

And finally, when do you think Chinese Democracy will be released?

You know, hopefully never. I haven't heard the songs that leaked onto the Internet, but somebody told me that they were shit. I think that they should either do a reunion or you should call it a day.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

They are from Germany..and frankly, they ROCK!! (not to mention that the lead singer is HOTT! ) If you want to hear one of their songs, its on my page. It should be the first one. Called Schrei ("Scream" in english)

btw...they sing in German...

Twins Bill Kaulitz (born September 1, 1989) and Tom Kaulitz (born ten minutes before his brother) had been performing since the age of 9. After putting on a show in their hometown of Magdeburg in 2001, Bill and Tom met Gustav Schäfer (born September 8, 1988) and Georg Listing (born March 31, 1987). Their similar taste in music led to the creation of the band 'Devilish'. In 2003, the group was approached by music producer Peter Hoffmann and were soon after signed with Universal Music Domestic Division in Hamburg. They were then known as 'Tokio Hotel' (Significance: 'Tokio' for the lively and engaging city of Tokyo and 'Hotel' for the band's constant touring around the country). Assisted by professionals, Bill co-wrote the majority of the songs on their album, Schrei (Scream).

The music video of their debut single "Durch den Monsun" (Through the Monsoon) has been playing on German television since July of 2005. The band quickly gained a multitude of fans after its release. The single appeared on the German music charts at #15 on August 20th and reached #1 on August 26th. It also climbed to #1 on the Austrian music charts. Second video was "Schrei"...This video also climbed to #1 all over Europe. They released their album Schrei in September of 2005. In early 2006, their third music video "Rette Mich" (Save Me) was released. This version of the song was different from the original version on their first album because of Bill's now propubescent voice and some instrumental differences. "Rette Mich" made it to the #1 spot as well. The re-release of their first album was initiated by Bill's voice change and was released with three new songs ("Schwarz (Black), "Beichte" (Confession) and "Thema nr. 1" (Topic #1) in March 2006 titled Schrei: So Laut Du Kannst (Schrei - Noch Lauter Edition) (Scream: As Loud As You Can (Scream - Even Louder Edition)). In September 2006 they released their fourth and last single from their album Schrei: "Der Letzte Tag" (The Last Day). This song also made it into the number one position. The video for "Der Letzte Tag" also includes a bonus track called "Wir Schliessen Uns Ein" (We Lock Ourselves Away).

Tokio Hotel is largely popular among teenage girls, of whom most are drawn by the sex appeal of the lead singer of the band, Bill Kaulitz and his twin brother Tom. There has been controversy about Bill's androgynous look (long unconventional dyed hairstyle, black nail polish, unconventional wardrobe), in spite of the fact that the young Kaulitz has made it clear that he is simply an artist expressing himself through his music as well as through his choice of clothing. There has also been controversy about Bill and Tom's weight and concern that their 'unhealthy' underweightness might cause complications for themselves as well as send a bad message to their fans. Furthermore, the band members have been criticized for being 'too young and immature' and for having their music composed and arranged by their production company for them.It is also said that Bill Kaulitz copied his hair style from Japanese singer Miyavi and band style from HIM.

According to recent interviews with the band, they are in the process of releasing their second album in English to gain international success and are currently improving their English skills. Recently 4 of their songs in English: "Through the Monsoon", "Scream", "Black" , and "Rescue Me" were leaked. A Universal Music spokeman assured that the versions are NOT Official, and that legal actions will be taken against those involved in the distribution of the songs.Tokio Hotel just performed the song "Instant Karma" (originally by John Lennon) at the "50 JAHRE BRAVO" (Translated, "50 Years of Bravo." Bravo is a very popular German youth magazine) on October 21, 2006. Tokio Hotel are currently working on a second album that is due to be released in 2007.

Pt. 5

I woke up to Slayer blasting from the stereo. Quickly, I got up and stumbled out into the living room where Vam was playing the XBOX. "Vam!" I yelled. "Turn this fucking shit down!" She looked up at me, then got up and put the stereo on mute. "What crawled up your ass last night?" she said. " Geez...I'm sorry, it's just I was up all night..." "Vam, we need to talk about something." I said. "About what?" Vam asked. I sighed. "Those threats that you've been getting in your email and printing out." There was a moment of silence. Then Vam started to yell. "You look through my fucking personal email?!" She stood up. "No!" "A stack of those emails you were getting were on the printer yesterday! "I thought it was something for your work and was going to give them to you but they were fucking DEATH THREATS!"I yelled back. Vam just stood there looking at me for a minute then said. "Fuck this shit, I can't deal with this right now...I'm leaving." Vam stormed out the door. On her way to the stairs(elevator is down for repairs), she ran into Brooke looking all happy. "Hey Vam, how are you..." Brooke was talking to thin air because Vam just ran past her."

"Whoa, what's with Vam?" asked Brooke, closing the door as she came into the apartment a minute later. "Ah, we kinda had a fight..." I said sitting down on the couch. "Must have been pretty bad." commented Brooke. "What was it about?" she asked curiously. "Nothing...nothing." I said. "So, what's up?" I asked, trying to change the subject. "Oh my god!" "You're not going to believe this...Brent is going to take me to Toi restarant!"(This is a place in L.A.) said Brooke excitedly, instantly forgetting her curiosity about what Vam and I were fighting about. "Holy shit!" I exclaimed. "Doesn't that place cost like...$50.00+ for everything on the menu?! "Yes!" "Ah Kayla, I think something special is going to happen then!" Brooke sighed. "Must be...because that place is no fucking joke." I said "By the way, did you make your date with Brent yesterday?" I asked. "Oh...yeah, except he had left a letter by the door telling me he couldn't make it, that's also why I think he's taking me to Toi's...to make up for it and mayvbe something else too." said Brooke, a flicker of annoyance crossed her face when she spoke about the letter.

Brooke and I hung out for a while until she got tired and went home. By that time is was almost 2:30 a.m. and Vam wasn't home yet. I called her cell phone hopeing she would answer; she didn't. I decided to go to some bars and see if she was at any of them. No luck. I sat in the car thinking hard at where she might be, hopeing she was ok. All of a sudden, I had a strong urge to go to H&H. As I pulled into the parking lot, Vam came out of the door. Quickly, I parked and went over to her. "What are you doing here?" asked Vam frowning."Hey Vam." I replied weakly. "What do you want Kayla?" said Vam. "Well, it was late and I started to worry about you and..." Just then Davey stepped out of H&H. He looked up and smiled. "Sorry Kayla, I'm locking up right now. "Oh, hey Davey, actually, I wasn't coming to get a tattoo today...maybe some other time." I said smiling at him. "Ok , well give me a call and I'll hook you up." said Davey cheerfully. "Thanks, and don't worry, I will!" I told him.
"We need to get together sometime and do something!" Vam said. "That's an excellent idea!" said Davey. "I'll call you and we can make some plans." he suggested. "Good idea.." said Vam. " Bye girls." said Davey and he started walking towards his car.

Turning back to Vam i asked "What were you doing here anyways?". Vam held up her arm. "Wow...nice." I said to Vam. She had a brand new tattoo. It was of a heart that was cracked down the middle, a broken heart. "Kayla, I'm still pissed at you, but I'm to tired to show it." said Vam. "Yeah...figured that." I said quietly.

So we drove to the apartment (we both had a car). When we got into the lobby, Vam slowed down. "Uh, hello." I said. "We have 3 flights of stairs to climb." "Yeah, I know, I just have this crazy bad feeling in my stomach." she replied.

I had just left the store with a 6-pack and icecream when my cell rang. "Hello?" I answerd. "Hey." said Vam. "Are you at the store?" she asked. "I was actually just about to leave." I said "Need something?" "Oh, well, could you please get some ink packages for the printer?" Vam asked. "I guess, but I thought you had just bought some just last week." "There's no possible way the printer is out already!." I said. "Sorry!" said Vam " "I have been having to print out loads of stuff for work." "Yeah...ok, whatever." I'll go get some, just black right?" I asked her. "Yep, thanks Kayla!." Vam said and hung up. After putting the stuff in the car, I went back in and grabbed some ink and finally left.

On my way home I started to wonder why Vam really needed all the ink for, because she was on paid vacation for several months and didn't really have to do much for work. When I got home, Vam was on her computer doing god knows what."There you go." I said handing her the ink to put into the printer. "Thanks so much." she replied. "Want a beer or icecream?" I asked her. "Not right now." Vam said...staring at her computer screen. "Alright...don't complain if it's all gone when you decide you finally want some" I said. Vam looked at me and stuck out her tongue. I rolled my eyes back. Later that night, Vam finally got up and went to bed. I was thirsty and couldn't sleep, so I went to the kitchen to get something to drink. On my way there I passed the printer and noticed a small stack of papers.

I was just going to ignore them, but then I rememberd that Vam said it was for work, so I decieded to grab them and put them in her room so she wouldn't forget them later. When I picked them up the top paper caught my eye. There on that paper was a threat. It said "We see your every move...watch your fucking back." I looked through the rest, and they all had some kind of threat or disturbing picture. Carefully, I set them back onto the printer so Vam woudn't know I had been looking at them because if she knew, she would be pissed. After I got my drink, I went to bed. All night I was tossing and turning trying to think of any people who hated Vam and I. Brooke's name flicked through my mind, but I quickly ruled it out. She was like a sister to us. Instanly, I felt very guilty of even thinking her name. Finally, after a few hours, I fell asleep.

I was the first one up and let me tell ya...I had the worst fucking headache ever! I just sat there trying to remember what happend last night, when Vam and Brooke woke up. "Oh fuck."groaned Brooke holding her head. "Got a killer headache eh?" I asked her. "Yeah...got any asprin?" she asked. "Oh yeah, I'll go grab some, Vam did you need any?" "Oh, no, I'm fine." she said. As I went into the kitchen, I got the same strange feeling as last night. It is hard to describe, it was like there was someone watching me even though I knew I was alone. I shook it off and got the asprin for Brooke.

When I got back into the living room, Brooke was putting on her shoes quickly. "What's the rush?" I asked, handing her the medicine and water. " I have a date with Brent in a hour and I have to go!" "God....can't believe I forgot!" Brooke mutterd. "Want a ride?" asked Vam. "Yeah, that would be gre-" "Can't." I interrupted her. "The car is still at the bar." "Shit!" "I'm going to ve so late!" exclamed Brooke. " Why don't you just call him?" Vam suggested. "Because his phone line is down for repairs and he never turns on his damn cell phone." she said. " Well, guess you should get going so your not to late." Vam said. "Yeah, see you later." said Brooke on her way out the door.

"Ah...so do you want to get the car or me?" I asked Vam. " Could you?" said Vam. "Uh huh...I need to go to the store anyways." I replied. "Did you need anything?" "Nah, I'm good." said Vam cleaning up the blankets and pillows. "Okay, see ya." I said picking up my cell and leaving. I deceided to walk instead of calling a taxi because it wasn't that far, and I needed some excersize anyways.

Okay...so that was kind of short! sorry...the next one will be longer, i promise!!
also, I will try and post the next part soon! (sooner then i did this one anyways)

Pt. 2

On our way home, we didn't talk. We were both wrapped up in our own thoughts. When we got home, Vam went to go get her laptop from her room and sat down at the table in the kitchen with a glass of water and I went to watch TV. Wildboyz was on so I watched some of that. All of a sudden, I heard a crash. "Fuck!" yelled Vam. I ran into the kitchen to see what was going on, and saw Vam shaking.

"Vam what's wrong?!" I asked her worried. "Nothing nothing...just a little shaken up that's all." she said. "About what?" I asked. "Just...nothing...nevermind, I'm okay." said Vam. "You sure?" "Because you look pretty scared there...maybe you should lie down for a little bit." I suggested. "Umm....yeah, sure." said Vam slowly. She left and went to lie down.

I started to clean up the water and broken glass when I saw her screensaver flash on. Curiously, I went over and moved the mouse. Vam's email inbox flicked onto the screen and there was the most horrible picture there. "What the fuck..." I whisperd. It was of a women, and she was cut up into all these different chunks. A man was standing over her and on his face were bits of human flesh...still red with blood. Under it all was a message, "We are coming." Quickly, I turned off and closed the computer wondering if it was someone's idea of a sick joke. A while later, Vam woke up from sleeping. "You want to see if Brooke wants to go out and get something to eat?" I asked. "Yeah, sounds good cuz I'm starving!" Vam replied. So I called Brooke and she wanted to go so we all went to Outback.

We all ate and talked about Vam and mines tattoo. "Yeah, so those are fucking awesome!" Brooke said. "When are you guys going to get more?" She asked. "Hmm....well. I have plans to get a broken heart maybe somewhere on or near my wrist." Said Vam thoughtfully. "Really?" "That would look great there." said Brooke. "Hehe...or you could get it ther-" "Excuse me." Said the waiter cutting me off. "Would you like the check?" he asked. "You guys ready to go?" I asked Brooke and Vam. "Yeah" they said in unison (at the same time). So we all left and went to some random bar.

Some hot guy named Jussi or something came up and started hitting on Brooke, but she wasn't interested in some guys name she could barely remember. Hours passed and we were so fucking drunk that we couldn't walk straight, so one of the bartenders called a cab for all of us and we went to mine and Vam's apartment.

As soon as I opend the door to the apartment, I knew somethin was wrong....it was like being hit with a bucket of ice cold water; sober instantly.Brooke and Vam were being very loud so I said "Brooke, Vam, shut the fuck up for a minute!" I hissed. "Hello?" I called into the darkness. Slowly, I crept into the kitchen with the other two following, giggiling slightly behind. Quickly, I flipped on the light and scanned the room, searching for anything that didn't belong or was out of place. Nothing was wrong. All three of us went from room to room looking for anything at all that could mean someone was or had been there. Again, nothing was found or noticed. (considering...we were all so drunk.) I let out a sigh. "Hey Brooke, you can crash on the pullout bed if you want..." I trailed off because Brooke had passed out on the couch right next to Vam. I got some blankets and pillows to cover them up, then made a bed and slept on the floor next to them...still a little paranoid....to afraid to be left alone.

Ok, so that was PT. 2 of Untitled (hey, i might keep that...) and I really hope you enjoyed it! more soon to come...because I already have them written!
"Ah." Today is the day I said. "Yep, are you ready?" asked Vam.I took a deep breath..."As ready as I'll ever be." I said. We stepped out of the car and walked into H&H tattoo shop (Hart & Huntington in L.A.).
"Hello, welcome to H&H" said the receptionist. "What can I do for you today?" "Well, we would like to get our very first tattoo." I said a little nervously. "Wonderful!" "Do you have anything in mind?" Asked the receptionist. "Actually we do" Said Vam. "I would like to get this..." Vam pulled out a picture of a 2+2=fish (it was a picture of a fish) "Hmm...ok, and for you?" she asked me. "Uh, right...I want to get a Heartagram tattoo." I said, grabbing the picture from my bag. "Alright then...if you'll both follow me..." We all went back to a room with 4 chairs, 3 were empty. "Please have a seat and I'll send someone back to get you to started!" said the receptionist.
"So...do you think it's going to hurt much?" I asked Vam. "Umm...I don't know, when my brother got his he said it felt like being stung by a bee." said Vam. "Ahaha...i laughed nervously..not to painful then." "Well...we're about to find out!" Vam said.
A few minutes later a man with thick, long black hair stepped into the room. His back was to us. Vam looked up from her cell phone. " Oh my god!" "Kayla!" Vam hissed. " Look at that guy!" I looked up and gasped. There standing in the room was our old friend Davey Havok!! He turned around and opend his mouth like he was going to say something then stopped. A look of happiness and shock showed on his face and he walked over to us. "Girls!" he said giving us each a kiss (on the cheek) and a hug. " What are you two doing here?!" Davey asked. "We came to get a tattoo." laughed Vam. "Oh right...this is a tattoo shop after all." said Davey. "What about you?" I asked. "I work here now." said Davey. "Really, I thought you were back in Philly still working at X-Treme Ink." I said a little curiously. "Ah...sadly no. Bam came over one day with Ryan and Rake..trashed the whole place." "Probably had to much whiskey" Davey said chuckiling a little. "They were in jail for a few days, bail was $100,000, they got out easily enough." "That's good...I mean, that they they weren't sent to prison or something like that." I said. "Where are they now?" asked Vam. " Well, Bam went to Finland, started a record label...I think Ryan and Rake are laying low..if you know what i mean." Davey said. "Ah...well, anyways, we came here for a tattoo...so lets get started!" I said.
We continued to talk while Davey worked on Vam's, then mine's tattoo. * 1 hour later* "There, done." said Davey, proudly wiping the excess ink from my arm. Vam and I thanked Davey. "These are so excellent...you were always gifted when it came to art." Vam said admiring her fresh tattoo. "You'll most likely be seeing us soon!" I said happily. "Glad to hear that you like them, and will be coming back for more." said Davey kindly. "Hey, what's your numbers and emails? Maybe I can have Bam call...and Ville too." asked Davey. "Ville!" "What is he doing now?" asked Vam. " Last I heard, he was on a European tour with his band." Davey replied thoughtfully. "Oh, that's right...I totally forgot about that." said Vam quietly. We gave Davey our phone numbers (cell and house), and email addresses, and after promising not to wait another four years to pass before we saw each other again...left.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the end of Part 1 of Untitled (yes i know...i still need a freakin name for it!) I really hope you liked it. Please tell me what you thought of it!! and BE HONEST!! I don't care if you hated it...just tell me so I don't waste my time posting this. Thanks!!
